Hey all,
I am running a system with udev (though NOT the "die hard", udev-only version described in the Gentoo Docs), hald, dbus and gnome-volume-manager.
My udev rules file creates sym link nodes whenever I plug in my devices like my digital camera or iPod, which I create mountpoints for in my fstab under /mnt.
However, I have 3 problems:
1) Gnome-volume-manager decided to create new mountpoints under /media, that point to the old, devfs style, "/dev/sd*" files. It also decides to do this on psuedo-random occasions, and makes duplicate copies of these mountpoints which I keep on having to delete. Now I have a messed up directory structure with mountpoints scattered around /media and /mnt, of which only half work at a given time (and with labelling like "USBDisk", I have no idea whether I'm accessing my digital camera or my USB pen drive.
2) Read and write times from my external devices have become incredibly slow. It will take me a good 60 seconds to open my camera in Nautilus, and even then, transfering files will usually fail after 10 seconds.
3) LILO wont update its configuration (ie, when I type "lilo" at the prompt) when I have my camera plugged in!! It complains how it cant write to /dev/sda, which seems a little obtuse.
At the moment, I am very confused - I have all these new technologies running on my system, but none of them work how I want.
Cheers guys |
