Hi everybody,

Don't dispair but this is yet another id software thread. We should nail one to the top of the forum.

The usual situation:

I have the original retail game media for

The Ultimate Doom
Doom II
Quake
Quake Mission Packs
Quake II
Hexen II

My aim is to start collecting reference documentation on how to setup these games exactly. After some long time of not playing, yesterday I wanted to enjoy a quick game of Doom in OpenGL but I failed to setup any of the Doom packages in Portage. Most of them segfault.

So, please help me

* choose the best, high quality game engine from Portage
* describe how to set it up with the original game data

Let's start with Doom/Doom II. Which of the many packages from Portage offers the best engine if I want to use the original WAD files, enjoy the benefit of 3D hardware acceleration, most usually OpenGL and have 3D mouse-look/aiming?*

* I think I remember using lsdldoom which won't run in OpenGL anymore for some reason.

Anybody interested in joining?

kind regards,
Tobias

Doomsday (games-fps/doomsday) provides the coolest-looking OpenGL-pretty graphics-mouselook-everything-but-the-kitchen-sink DOOM experience for me. Since I'm a DOOM fanatic, I really can't speak for the other Id games...

:)

Now that's a pretty good start. Let's extend. After emerging the ebuild, what's next?

Let's collect this and make it something that could go into the howto sub-forum.

regards,
Tobias

Though I don't think the sound files are available at any of the links given... I still have them somewhere if needed :)
