Need help encrypting /home

I am curious about encrypting filesystems and how it works. I would like to be able to encrypt my /home (I think I should create it as a separate partition) and swap, but not root. I would like to not just know how to do this, but understand how it works.

On my side, I should acquire a new HD in some time. I will encrypt that new FS
