sarà una domanda stupida ma non ho ancora chiarito questo dubbio:
per aggiornare il portage ho sempre fatto emerge rsync ma sulla guida ho letto questo:
The Portage tree is usually updated with rsync, a fast incremental file transfer utility. Updating is fairly simple as the emerge command provides a front-end for rsync:

# emerge --sync
ovvero, si parla di rsync ma poi il comando che viene riportato è emerge --sync
mi sono confuso le idee  |

emerge rsync e' stato deprecato da un po' perche' si confondeva con emerge net-misc/rsync . Allora hanno messo solo emerge sync

rsync é il nome del protocollo/utility utilizzata per fare il sync.
La homepage del utility: http://rsync.samba.org/
Questa utility viene invocata da emerge su richiesta dell'utente, e, come detto da fedeliallalinea, inizialmente l'opzione da passare ad emerge per avviare la sincrondizzazione con rsync era "emerge rsync", poi deprecata in favore di "emerge sync".

Puoi usare indifferentemente entrambi

Non sono un esperto del portage, ma personalmente ho seguito bovinamente le istruzioni (prima su un ambiente di test, poi in produzione)... al momento nessun problema su nessuna macchina.
Comunque, se quancuno sapesse spiegarmi cosa ho fatto esattamente avrebbe la mia eterna gratitudine |
