There doesn't seem to exist any documentation about this...

couple of things to know about this.
1) MOST ethernet cards auto-detect all this and set it themselves.
2) MOST switches also support this and help the card determine what all is going on
3) Goofing the settings may have "Nasty Side Affects." I don't THINK this could kill hardware but it may be possible.

with those things in mind...

check out mii-tool and it's associated man pages. That should give you enough info to do this. Before doing it though, just run mii-tool (as root) and it should tell you what things are set to at the moment and what the cards have detected.

u will get that info on the forcedeth homepage. i think i have seen it some other place also.
