Hello all,
I've been using Fedora for a while and this is my first attempt at installing Gentoo. I've been following the Gentoo handbook meticulously from chapter 1. The only part I stray from the examples given is that I made an extra partition for /home where the handbook example only makes /root /boot and swap.
The problem is I get a segmentation fault towards the end of chapter 6 when I do the bootstrap.
I'm installing off a LiveCD cause I don't have a fast internet connection. I'm using the DVD that came with the October issue of LinuxFormat.
Anyone know what the problem is likely to be?
<Edit>
More information:
I'm installing 2004.2 from stage 1 tarball
Athlon-xp 2500
Single IDE HDD
DVD ROM
I also wrote down the spot where it seg faulted and I'll post that as soon as I get home. |

These are the messages I get:
Invalid or unset record 'packages' in mtimedb
Invalid or unset record 'eclass' in mtimedb
A few lines later I get the seg fault:
tbz2tool.c: In function 'exists'
tbz2tool.c:25:internal compiler error: Segmentation fault
I'll try the install from scratch again and see how I go. |

First check if you have downloaded the right image for your computer.
Some ppl complained about error with bootstrap latelly, My advice is to use one live CD and start from there, you will copile everything at the end so you can start with older packages that came with the CD's.

I believe I have the correct image. I chose the x86 image.
I'm on an AthlonXP machine.
I've been able to make some progress but now i'm stuck on something else.
Half way through the bootstrap, I get this error:
>>> emerge (4 of 4) sys-devel/binutils-2.14.90.0.8-r1 to /
!!! File is corrupt or incomplete. (Digests do not match)
.
. < digests here, I won't type them out >
.
!!! File does not exist: /usr/portage/distfiles//binutils-2.14.90.0.8.tar.bz2
What's gone wrong here? |
