The problem:

I try to enable monitor mode on my brand spanking new Orinoco Classic Gold (PC card):

Code:
iwconfig eth1 mode monitor

and I get this error:

Code:
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
SET failed on device eth1 ; Operation not supported.

and in my kernel log I see this error:

Code:
eth1: Monitor mode support is buggy in this firmware, not enabling

What I have already done:

1. Searched google
2. Searched gentoo forums
3. Inserted a Linsys wireless PC card, typed the same command, and it WORKS PERFECTLY
4. Re-emerged pcmcia-cs
5. Tried a diffferent version of pcmcia-cs
6. Re-downloaded the orinoco drivers from http://savannah.nongnu.org/cvs/?group=orinoco, and installed them
7. Banged my head

What I am running:

* Vanilla Sources 2.6.6
* pcmcia-cs 3.2.5-r1 (I also tried 3.2.7 but it doesn't work either)
* orinoco drivers fresh from http://savannah.nongnu.org/cvs/?group=orinoco

Keep in mind that it already works with my Linksys card. The kernel error said something about the firmware being buggy on the card. The only reason I got this stupid card was so I could put an external antenna on it.

Is anyone else having/had this problem?
Does anyone know how to fix it?
Did I just waste $100?

Just a thought, have you made sure that there is no newer firmware available for the card?

I currently have the newest firmware on the card. I don't think I can get the firmware update utility to revert to an older version.

you can download firmware upgrades/downgrades from shmoo's monitor mode patch page. I don't have the link handy, but google "shmoo orinoco" and it should turn up. It's at the bottom of the page. there were supposedly issues with the 8.10 firmware, but I would try to upgrade your firmware to the most recent-recent version, or downgrade to something below 8.10

I'm having a likewise problem, I just got my Orinoco Classic Gold card today, and as far as I can see, it works.

Code:
root@cerebelum fx # iwconfig

eth1      IEEE 802.11-DS  ESSID:""  Nickname:"HERMES I"
          Mode:Managed  Frequency:2.457GHz  Access Point: 00:00:00:00:00:00
          Bit Rate:11Mb/s   Tx-Power=15 dBm   Sensitivity:1/3
          Retry limit:4   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:off

I emerged Airsnort, and now when I try to switch the card to monitor mode I get
Code:
root@cerebelum fx # iwconfig eth1 mode Monitor
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
SET failed on device eth1 ; Invalid argument.

I'm running Gentoo-dev-sources 2.6.3-r1

$100 for the card? I got it for about $80 Canadian :P

I got mine at work, so I got it a little cheaper than retail, its the only place in my area I could find which could get it.
