|
|
Hi,
If I do a emerge rsync, a lot of ebuilds are downloaded, even if I did a rsync just a minute ago. It started after the rsync mirror implementaion. I noticed it depends on the mirror it connects to, from some mirrors no files are downloaded, from others it looks like the whole tree is downloaded again....
Is this a config thing ? Its rather annoying to see almost the whole portage tree downloaded if it isn't nessecary.
greets,
Nossie |

when you say downloaded, do you mean the output like so:
Code: |
x11-wm/sawfish-merlin/files/
x11-wm/sawfish-merlin/files/sawfish/
x11-wm/sawfish-merlin/files/sawfish/lisp/
x11-wm/sawfish-merlin/files/sawfish/lisp/merlin/
|
Or like so:
Code: |
app-doc/gentoo-web/gentoo-web-2.2.ebuild
5142 100% 4.90MB/s 0:00:00
app-misc/colortail/files/digest-colortail-0.3.0-r1
66 100% 0.00kB/s 0:00:00
x11-misc/accessx/accessx-0950.ebuild
655 100% 0.00kB/s 0:00:00

I mean like the second block, like this:
Quote: |
app-doc/gentoo-web/gentoo-web-2.2.ebuild
5142 100% 4.90MB/s 0:00:00
app-misc/colortail/files/digest-colortail-0.3.0-r1
66 100% 0.00kB/s 0:00:00
x11-misc/accessx/accessx-0950.ebuild
655 100% 0.00kB/s 0:00:00 |

I would think it is due to mirrors not being as updated as eachother to the source tree. |

Yeah, unfortunately you're probably right.
It shouldn't kill anything.. but it is definately annoying. |

I think it has something to do with the modified times of the ebuilds on the servers. I think the easiest way to solve the problem is to pick one of the rsync.gentoo.org mirrors, and use its IP address instead of jumping around with the DNS/round robbin solution..
Code: | $ host rsync.gentoo.org
rsync.gentoo.org. has address 130.225.247.90
rsync.gentoo.org. has address 132.229.67.7
rsync.gentoo.org. has address 195.43.246.52
rsync.gentoo.org. has address 195.149.39.120
rsync.gentoo.org. has address 195.159.103.6
rsync.gentoo.org. has address 208.254.244.70
rsync.gentoo.org. has address 65.222.93.70
rsync.gentoo.org. has address 128.227.212.225
rsync.gentoo.org. has address 130.207.108.134

Run pings (some appear to ignore pings) and traceroutes to them all, and then compare the actual rsync'ing performance of those with the lowest latency. _________________ - Kyle Manna
