I am using gnome 2.8 and all my icons in my menubar have disappeared and I cannot launch gconf-editor at all and if I try to load gnome-theme-manager I get this error message:
"The default theme schemas could not be found on your system. This means that you probably do not have metacity installed, or that your gconf is configured incorrectly."

Hello,

What command did you use to install gnome from portage?
emerge gnome?

Does gconf-editor state that the command is not found, what error is gconf-editor giving when you try to run it?

Gnome 2.8.0 has done this to me several times, usually have to logout of gnome and back in. I'm sure this has been fixed in 2.8.1, but there are STILL no ebuilds for it... and its been out forever.

(ya ya, don't flame me with bs like "you can write your own" or something, thats not my job :P )

I used:
emerge --sync
emerge -u --deep world
(this was an update from gnome 2.6 which worked fine)

gconf-editor loads if i clear out my user directory. I think it might have something to do with Gno-sx icon theme i am using... but then again maybe not... but at any rate it works with a clean directory for a time... and then after a period of no use, I will load up my user account and it will have these problems.
