Well, I've reported this with 2004.2 and now I'm telling you guys again... Why is there no dhcp client package on x86 live cd (2004.3)? How am I supposed to connect to the internet without it?!?!? Interesting thing is that there is no client on the packages CD neither!

Any thoughts?

I was able to connect, and my IP is dynamically assigned.

The livecd DOES include dhcpcd, at least the minimal and the universal CDs. The only change so far is that dhcpcd was removed from baselayout as it is not necessary on all systems, but that has nothing to do with your problem.

I had the same problem - although the LiveCD does include dhcpcd, because it's not included in the base layout, nor on the package
CD, it is necessary to get networking working post-installation without DHCP to be able to download a DHCP client (which in my case proved to be a real problem, as I did not have network access during installation).

I can understand the argument for not including it in the base layout, but it should be on the package CD.

Well, dhcpcd*.tar.gz isn't anywhere on the either package or livecd. That's what I'm talking about. It is in the portage, but from where should I get the sorce code and patches to compile it ?!?!?!?

That's a huge minus for the gentoo instalation, and it should be at least noted in the handbook that you have to download dhcp packages before even thinking of starting a gentoo install on a clean machine.

You are supposed to install dhcpcd *before* reboting the system and booting your kernel, that is, without CD. If you check the Installation Handbook, you'll see that it tells you explicitly to emerge dhcpcd before rebooting in case you need it. Additionally, there is no point to ask for a dhcpcd package for the following reason: if you have network connection, you can emerge it, so you can get the sources from any mirror and, if you can't, that's because you do not have a network connection.

See networking tools. You definitely missed that one!
