Hey,

I'm having trouble with XKB....

Every time I startx(or log in using xdm) I get an error dialog saying...

Code:

Error activating XKB configuration.
Probably internal X server problem.

X server version data:
Gentoo Linux( The X.Org Foundation 6.8.0 revision r3-0.2.2.1)
60800000

If you report this situation as a bug, please include:
 - The result of xprop -root | grep XKB
 - The result of gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/ketboard/xkb

But I don't have xprop. gconftool-2 doesnt report any errors!

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Ian

Same error for me: it occured after upgrade to xorg-x11 6.8.0-r3.
I'm thinking to downgrade to the previous release, but before doing that, I'd like to listen to other advices...
Can anybody help us?
Thank you!

Same problem here, using fluxbox. The culprit is that I have /usr/libexec/gnome-settings-daemon in my ~/.fluxbox/apps file to start automatically.

Happened after the xorg upgrade. One thing I've noticed is that the Ctrl-Alt-Fn buttons don't work to switch back to the console. Pity, I have to do it remotely from another system.

Same problem: unable to switch to other consoles and stopping xdm I can switch again.
Starting directy with startx command I noticed this error: can't open compiled keyboard map in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/compiled
The system search *.xkm files but it isn't unable to find them.
Moreover I noticed that I haven't .xkm files in my system! I think the new installation of xorg has removed them. I try to downgrade to the previous release, but same problems: no .xkm files in my system and same error.
I would try to recreate them, do you know how to do that?
Thank you! Bye!
(If we exchange our experience I think we can resolve the problem!)

I don't have any .xkm's either. Strange indeed. Not sure we can fix this one by ourselves, can anyone else who hasn't upgraded to the latest xorg do a locate xkm and see what you can find?

Just edit xorg.conf changing this line:
Code:
Driver      "kbd"

To this one as mention in the xorg.example file.
Code:
Driver      "keyboard"

Then loading Gnome, (meaning gnome-settings), you'll get two more popups and a dialog giving you the choice between X and Gnome configuration. Choose X andl there won't be any error next time.

well duno if it'll work for you guys/ladies but if you've the following line in your xorg.conf :

Option "XkbRules" "xfree86"

then that is your problem you need to change it to this :

Option "XkbRules" "xorg"

next time gnome runs it'll ask if you want to use Gnome or X settings choose X (as said before in this post)

works fine now here (including CTRL+ALT+F# for changing console)

hope this will be usefull to someone :)
