It's all explained here:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=175419&highlight=memory+usage+free

Most memory is cached: Cached memory is essentially free, in that it can be replaced quickly if a running (or newly starting) program needs the memory.

Unused memory is wasted memory. The Linux kernel will try to use all the available memory, one way or other. If the memory isn't used by the applications it will be used for disk caching.
