Trying to finish up a fresh install..

I emerged fluxbox, and fired it up.. Problem is, it freezes after using it for a few seconds.. If I let it just sit and do nothing, it seems fine, but a few seconds after I open xterm and start typing, it freezes, the screen goes black, I cant move my mouse and the keyboard quits responding.. I have to hard power off the system and turn it back on again..

Any ideas?

can you give more details? ssh to the system from another computer, if available, to see what's going on.

Had the problem with the 'stable' and the '~x86' versions.. I think the problem isn't with fluxbox but with xorg-x11.. If I just start it, then I still freeze... I get about 10 seconds of usability and then it dies :-(

Want my xorg config?

it could be fluxbox. although i've never had issues with fluxbox, openbox made X freeze. i'm using xorg-x11-6.8.0-r3 and fluxbox-0.9.10-r3 without problems.

sure, post your xorg.conf. what video card are you using?

It's an onboard intel card.. 82810e .. The box is an hp pavilion 502n .. Only things I could find listed it as having 11 megs of video ram.. Thought that was odd, so I tried a couple different numbers in the config..

...
So how do I fix it? Do I really need more than 11 megs of video ram or 128 megs of system ram to run flux?

Edit:
I've booted flux on a pentium 166 w/ a voodoo 3 before.. It had a lot less resources available to it..

is your swap set up? are you sure you didn't specify the video ram in your xorg.conf?

Okay.. Here are the things I've noticed..

Thinks work fine logged in as root.. if I startx as root, nothing at all breaks.. things seem to work flawlessly..

If I log in as a user.. The problem occurs.. X works for less than a minute of usuable time..

Searched google some more and stuff.. Discovered it's probably a problem with my video card.. the 810 drive isn't just great so it seems..

What I've done for the moment is disable 1024x768 resolution and added
Code:
 Option "NoAccel"
to my xorg.conf file.. This seems to have resolved the issue for me..

I've got to do some more testing to figure out exactly which xorg options break a user running it..

Any insight as to why things work fine as root without changing the config file but not as a user? I tried copying all my .<blah> files from /root to /home/<user> .. No go there..

How do you check was color depth your x-server is running at? It could be that I only have this problem at 24 bit.. but not sure how to check what I'm running at.. :-/

looking at the config file is the only way i know. your DefaultDepth is 16.

when things run as root but not as a user, it usually makes me think the permissions are wrong. in this case, i'm not sure how that could be.

Yeah I found that..

Things work fine when the depth is set to 24 bit.. Total weirdness.. I guess that's the solution.. Blah..

Here's my unrelated question..
I mount hda5 and hda6.. at /mnt/media and /mnt/files .. How do I give a user account access to them instead of just root?

add user to the mount options. for example:
Code:
/dev/cdroms/cdrom0 /mnt/cdrom   iso9660         noauto,user,ro          0 0
