update system

I did a stage3 install with 2004.3. i want to know if upgrading the system would cause any problem if not how do i upgrade my system to current portage or should i say as if i did a stage1 install.

The stages do not affect how you upgrade. It is only the amount of things you compile at the beginning.

emerge sync
emerge -aDvu --newuse world

will bring everything up-to-date both package version and in respect to any USE flags settings (--newuse) that might have changed.
