i'm using 2004.3 on and athlon xp. when i do emerge --sync as part of the install process i get this error
Code:
Performing Global Updates: /usr/portage/profiles/updates/4Q-2004
(Could take a couple of minutes if you have a lot of binary packages.)
  .='update pass'  *='binary update'  @='/var/db move'
  s='/var/db SLOT move' S='binary SLOT move' p='update /etc/portage/package.*'
.....................................s.....
>>> /tmp/sandboxpids.tmp file mode: r+ open: No such file or directory
>>> pids file write: Illegal seek

aux_get(): (0) Error in sys-apps/portage-2.0.51-r3 ebuild. (1)
               Check for syntax error or corruption in the ebuild. (--debug)

>>> /tmp/sandboxpids.tmp file mode: r+ open: No such file or directory
>>> pids file write: Illegal seek

aux_get(): (0) Error in sys-apps/portage-2.0.51-r2 ebuild. (1)
               Check for syntax error or corruption in the ebuild. (--debug)

Can any one help me with this. i have tried 2004.2 and i get the same error. I'm building the system from a running Gentoo system on another harddrive instead of using a boot disk. is that the problem?

I guess i should have done a better job searching, sorry about the poor forum etiquet. I will look in to this, but if anyone else has any ideas let me know. I guess i just don't understand why this would do this on a new install.

EDIT: also if i disable the sandbox does it need to be enabled? I assuming for best practices it needs to be. If some one could enlighten me on this that would be great. Thanks for your time

There's an alternative installation guide somewhere on the Gentoo pages. Is your method of install included in that guide?

Generally speaking, you can sync Portage with or without sandbox enabled.

Thanks for the help Starcub. Well i got frustrated yesterday and just used knoppix to install it. I will check that alternative installation guide and check if the way i was trying to install was supported just for reference.
