I know the emu Live 5.1 cards are supposed to be rock solid, was wondering about the SB16PCI cards? Are they as solid? (I have one availble to me).

http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/

Check there, if it's listed as emu10k1 it's very well supported

You probably want hardware mixing.

I bought an Audigy 2zs and I love it. I think there are several audigy cards supported (if not all), check the website above like avieth said though.

I enabled PCMCIA in the kernel
Code:
CONFIG_PCMCIA=m
CONFIG_PCMCIA_LOAD_CIS=y
CONFIG_PCMCIA_IOCTL=y

and emerged the latest alsa-drivers (currently 1.0.11_rc5) and and sys-apps/pcmcia-cs and then it is really Plug&Play ;-)
