|
|
When following the alsa configuration guide, I got to the penultimate step with no problems. When I attempted to start the alsasound init script, I got this message
No mixer config in /etc/asound.state, you have to unmute your card
The guide doesn't say anything about this. I continued by running amixer which did produce lots of output as the guide said. I also 'unmuted' the various amixer settings. When I tried to play a wav file though there was no sound (but also no error messages).
I guess I've got to unmute the sound card but does anyone know how to do that? You'll be my eternal freind if you do. I can't work in silence anymore :-%

Hi.
You can try to read it again.
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/alsa-guide.xml
And about half the page down you find.
Quote: | Unmute the Channels |
And it say
Quote: | Code Listing 3.6: Unmuting the sound channels
# amixer set Master 100 unmute
# amixer set PCM 100 unmute
(Only if the above isn't sufficient:)
# amixer set Center 100 unmute
# amixer set Surround 100 unmute

That is exactly what I was referring to when I said this. The problem was that there was an error message before I got to this stage and the guide doesn't say anything about it. However I continued and executed the commands
Code: |
# amixer set Master 100 unmute
# amixer set PCM 100 unmute
(Only if the above isn't sufficient:)
# amixer set Center 100 unmute
# amixer set Surround 100 unmute
|
For what it's worth, I also ran alsamixer and set each channel to it's maximum value.
Does anyone know how to unmute the card as opposed to unmuting the channels? |

Sorry,
But this is the only thing you have to do.
There is no card unmute.
If you run amixer again after unmuting the
channels, you should see that it is unmuted and
the volum is set to 100 procent.
If you emerged the alsa-tools you have the alsamixer (gui).
You can start that in a console and then by pressing 'm' muting
and unmuting any channel.

Ahaa
That worked. Thanks very much.
Sorry if I sounded a bit narked in my earlier post. I was getting a little frustrated after an already rubbish day at work. Much happier now though
