I am installing linux on a friend's computer, and we are running into a problem. He has a Nvidia GeForce 4, 128mb. When not enabling the nvidia option in xorg.conf, we get graphics just fine, except movies ran in mplayer are horizontally skewed, kind of dotted...well it's hard to describe. And when using the nvidia option, X acts just totally weird: the bar at the bottom (I use fluxbox, so you know what I'm talking about) shows blank, and right-clicking on the desktop doesn't bring up a menu as normal; instead, just the headers of the menu and not the menu itself. In addition, xterm doesn't display any text, and, in what is by far the weirdest thing I have ever seen in linux, typing in glxinfo brings up not text, but (and try hard to imagine this) a screenshot of my friend's windows background, broken up and assembled roughly in the shape of the output one might expect from glxinfo.
Anyway, does anyone know what to do in this situation? Thanks.
