Posted: Thu Dec 02, 2004 9:12 pm Post subject: SOLVED: Kernel Panic: Install on PowerEdge 1750 |
|
|
For how I figured this out, read this post.
Here's the setup:
Dell PowerEdge 1750
Two drives, 73GB each, in a RAID1 config.
When I installed via LiveCD, the drive was seen as /dev/sda.
Code: |
/boot /dev/sda1 (ext2)
/dev/sda2 (swap)
/ /dev/sda3 (ext3)
/home /dev/sda5 (ext3)
/var /dev/sda6 (ext3)
/opt /dev/sda7 (ext3)
|
my grub.conf read:
Code: |
root (hd0,0)
kernel (hd0,0)/boot/kernel-2.4.28 root=/dev/sda3
|
However, upon boot, I get a kernel panic:
Code: |
VFS: Cannot open root device "sda3" at 08:03
VFS: Unable to mount root
|
as well as a line about specifying a valid "root=" line.
Now, when I got into /dev, I see lots of sdaX, sdbX, sdcX, and sddX entries, as well as an "ataraid" directory with lots of dXpY entries (0<X<2, 1<Y<15).
So, what would be the proper entries for grub, and correspondingly, for the /etc/fstab file?
Thanks in advance,

-Do you have SCSI disk support compiled into your kernel?
-Do you have EXT3 support compiled in too?
If both of those are yes, theres probably some hardware driver you are missing. What is the output of "lsmod" on the live cd? Your motherboard may be emulating some funky SCSI chipset that you need support for as well. _________________ http://ckdake.com/ |

SCSI support: yes, compiled in.
EXT3, yes, compiled in.
I've made sure to compile in all modules listed by lsmod during liveCD installation. _________________ [img:8bc07761ed]http://www.nukedgallery.net/signature.jpg[/img:8bc07761ed] |

Can you drop a hint as to what you did? That URL is no longer valid. _________________ "Blessed is he who finds happiness in his own foolishness, for he will always be happy". |
