Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to setup ivtv and bttv in the same computer. I can get ivtv working great on its own, i put in my bttv card and my ivtv card and neither work. I have tried a bunch of different settings kernels etc, with no luck. I get some funky messages on dmesg too....
I get no problems with Ivtv on its own. But two cards= hell

I found this thread searching and thought, "Oh, Boy!". But alas, no responses. I'm having the exact same problem. I'll try posting a bit more info in case anyone else can help.

I'm on kernel 2.6.9-gentoo-r1. I tried to use emerge for the bttv and ivtv modules, but there are lots of problems with that and the kernel (something about the kernel not being allowed to write to some location and config-kernel being suggested by masked). So I downloaded the latest tars marked stable and did the ./configure|make|make install bits on them. I also renamed the msp3400.o and used the one from ivtv. Ivtv works fine when it is installed, but when I put in one of my two PixelView cards, I get problems in three areas.

The hardware is as follows:
Soyo Dragon Ultra Platinum Edition SY-P4X400 with a 2.4G P4 and 512M ram.
Onboard audio with C-Media CMI8738-MX controller (eventually, I want to use SPIDF out, but testing with plain stereo and cheapy speakers)
PVR-250 capture card
PixelView card Rev 8E (or 9D, both are supposed to be type 70 with tuner type 2 - note 9D, not 9B which is type 72)
Radeon 9500 Pro with the ATI binary drivers installed

As I said, just the PVR-250 by itself works. If I add the PixelView (either one), I run into the following problems.

1. /etc/modules.d/bttv
It was my understanding I needed to create this file, then run modules-update. However, when I do, it appears nothing in it gets used, as dmesg always shows the bttv driver trying to autodetect, which it is horrible. Instead, I have to add all my parameters to the line that loads the bttv driver in /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6.

2. Once I've added the lines into 'autoload, I can't get any applications to use the /video1 (/video0 is the PVR-250). I've tried mplayer and kdetv.

3. Most configurations kill my sound output (the driver used is snd_cmipci). In my latest round, I think I have it back (not sure how, though).

4. Most attempts have left capturing from the PVR-250 only capturing video.

Here is all the data that I hope is needed to find out what is wrong.

/etc/modules.d/bttv (what I tried to use)

Code:
# alias-char-major-81-0 bttv
# alias-char-major-61 lirc_gpio
# options bttv card=70 tuner=2 radio=1 gbuffers=4

/etc/modules.d/ivtv

Code:
alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-81-1 ivtv
options ivtv ivtv_debug=1
options msp3400 once=1 simple=1
add below ivtv msp3400 saa7115 tuner

/etc/modules.d/alsa (some leading comments omitted)

Code:
alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss
alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss

# Set this to the correct number of cards.

# --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
# --- ALSACONF verion 1.0.6 ---
options snd  device_mode=0666
alias snd-card-0 snd-cmipci
alias sound-slot-0 snd-cmipci
# --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---

/etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6

Code:
8139too
agpgart
via_agp
fglrx
ivtv
i2c_dev
bttv card=70 tuner=2 radio=1 gbuffers=4
btaudio

Output of dmesg (only the ivtv and bttv stuff)

(I can't find any reference to what the "Ignoring new-style parameters in presence of obsolete ones" means.)

If there is anything else I need to provide, please let me know, and I'll run whatever is needed!

The only promising things I've found so far have been a mention that the sound card may be upset if it doesn't get /dev/dsp0, and that many others have reported problems with two capture cards that have different tuners installed. But I haven't been able to tell for sure if either problem applies to me, and at any rate the suggested fixes didn't work for me, so here I am.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Jeff.
