hi there....

i have a confusing problem with en IBM eServer xSeries 225

i compiled the system by using the live-cd (2004.2) all went fine...

i have build:
Code:
Gentoo Base System version 1.4.16
Portage 2.0.51-r3 (default-linux/x86/2004.3, gcc-3.3.4, glibc-2.3.4.20040808-r1, 2.6.9-gentoo-r6 i686)
=================================================================
System uname: 2.6.9-gentoo-r6 i686 Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 2.66GHz
distcc 2.16 i686-pc-linux-gnu (protocols 1 and 2) (default port 3632) [disabled]
Autoconf: sys-devel/autoconf-2.59-r5
Automake: sys-devel/automake-1.8.5-r1
Binutils: sys-devel/binutils-2.15.90.0.1.1-r3
Headers:  sys-kernel/linux26-headers-2.6.8.1-r1
Libtools: sys-devel/libtool-1.5.2-r7
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86"

COMPILER=""
CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/share/config /var/qmail/control"
CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d"
CXXFLAGS="-O3 -mcpu=pentium4 -fomit-frame-pointer"
DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles"
FEATURES="autoaddcvs autoconfig ccache distlocks sandbox sfperms"
GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.osuosl.org http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo"
MAKEOPTS="-j2"
PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages"
PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp"
PORTDIR="/usr/portage"
PORTDIR_OVERLAY=""
SYNC="rsync://192.168.1.5/portage"
USE="3dnow X apm arts avi berkdb bitmap-fonts crypt cups encode f77 foomaticdb gdbm gif gpm gtk gtk2 imlib jpeg kde ldap libg++ libwww mad mikmod mmx motif mpeg ncurses nls nptl oggvorbis opengl oss pam pdflib perl pic png python qt quicktime readline sdl slang spell sse ssl svga tcpd tiff truetype x86 xml2 xmms xv zlib"

the machine runs fine...but i can't compile anything (only a few small packages) i get every time i want compile an segmentation fault.

i know where seg.faults depend normaly...but i don't think it in these case because with live-cd and memtest86 all looks good.

i have recompiled gcc glibc for 2 times now with no result :-(

any sugestions?

Maybe try changing O3 to O2 in your cflags and see if that makes a difference.

Also, you might want to try recompiling gcc. If you can't do it directly, use the livecd.

We were having the same problems on the e-server. Tracked it down to the kernel. Try using development-sources instead of gentoo-dev-sources. (if you're using 2.6, which sounds like you are). Once we recompiled the kernel from development-sources everything started compiling again. :)
