I did an 'emerge system' yesterday, but after rebooting, my gnome desktop is behavoring wierdly. That is, i can't click on a windows' title bar and drag it anymore -- the desktop becomes useless....
this is 2.6.9 kernel.

Yep, this exact thing happened to me too.. except on my root account..
All borders on windows, and both menulines on top and bottom.. suddenly gone.. I suspect buggy nvidia drivers.. |

are you sure a window manager is running?
what happens when you try and run metacity? |

When starting metacity, the borders around the window come back.. none of the bars.. then within a minute after starting metacity, the system crashes back to the login.. when logging in again, the borders are gone again.. and so on and so on... |

Turns out the saved session content is either broken or incompatible somehow. remove the session info under .gnome2 and use the default gnome session seem to solve the problem. |

.gnome2 should be a hidden directory in your home directory. |
