Hi.

I'd like to identify my motherboard other than by rebooting. Is it possible?

Thanks.

Open up that case, it's usually printed on the board somewhere :)

Well you could theoretically look at lspci and the various other /proc directories to find out what components you have and then try to search to see what possible boards have that set of components, but a reboot is probably the easiest, or taking off the side of the case if for some reason you can't power down.

Why do you need to find it out without rebooting anyway?

Code:
# emerge lshw
# lshw | $PAGER

Use DMI

Try emerge dmidecode. You can try to retrive some information form the DMI block of the ROM BIOS.

Mainly because my server takes an eternity to boot, not due to Gentoo but to hardware scan. I have an embedded Promise Fasttrack which I couldn't find how to disable. It scans all the disks - but there are none. And it takes soooo much time.

For other reasons it's very boring to remove the case. It's an old case that has no removable side. The whole cover must be removed after I unplug the cables, remove the machine from the furniture...

I'll also try dmidecode and lshw.

Thanks to all.
