Hi there,
I'm trying to install gentoo 2004.3 for Athlon64 on my Targa Notebook.
I just can't get any network connection after booting the live cd. Everything seems to be detected and installed (btw my eth card is a Via Rhine II). I can ping the localhost but anything else fails. When I try to run adsl-start I get either a "....TIME OUT" or a "Transmit timed out...." and then a "TIME OUT".
I've read some posts about people having problems with VIA Rhine Adapters but I checked lspci and lsmod and everything seemed to be fine.
PLEASE if you have any idea let me know. I really have to get on with the installation.
THX in advance

Does ifconfig list your network interface? Have you tried running dhcpcd on that interface?

had the same problem with the timeouts on my laptop with a via_rhine build in, and it seemed to get solved by not having the eth0 card start up at boot
and setting
iface_eth1="dhcp"
iface_eth1="-R" in the /etc/conf.d/net

hope this helps

hi again,
ifconfig lists eth0 and lo. I have also tried to use dhcp on a router but after
Code:
dhcpcd eth0
my ethernet card is not active anymore but I can "up" it again. I just can't ping any local machine in my LAN.

Okay, here's how I generally configure network cards. You just need to go one step at a time a make sure each step worked correctly.

1) modprobe correct-driver
2) tail /var/log/messages (Please post the output... should show information about your card)
3) ifconfig eth0 up
4) ifconfig (please post output)
5) dhcpcd eth0

Did everything but the last point (dhcpcd eth0) since theres no other machine or network available right now.

Alright, it looks the you've loaded the correct modules and the kernel is aware of your card. You've also been able to get the interface up so that's working fine too.

I don't know anything about ADSL. I just have a cable modem connected to my DHCP server, so naturally all my LAN clients use DHCP. I'm probably not going to be much help here.

First off, does your laptop have a direct connection to your ADSL modem? Or does your network look more like this: ADSL --> Router --> Clients? If you have a direct connection to your ADSL modem, I can't help you that much. Have you tired adsl-setup as detailed here? If you have a boxed router like a Linksys or something you should just be able to run dhcpcd eth0 and get a DHCP lease from your router with all the good information.

Hope this helps a little.

I think the problem is not the adsl script or the adsl modem since I am not able to get a connection via my ethernet card at all. I tried to ping another pc in my home lan and it didn´t work. Then I took my notbook to a friend of mine and tried to connect to his router using dhcp and by using a static ip. Both attempts failed, so I guess it has something to do with my ethernet card.
But thx anyway :D

If you have another ethernet card to try you could always swap that in and see if the situation improves but you need to configure your connection to your ADSL modem either staticly or dynamically using DHCP for things to work.

I actually think your network card is fine. If you'll notice ifconfig eth0 doesn't list any IP address or subnet information. You'll need that information to get connected.

Could you please tell me more information about your home network?

Try this:

boot: gentoo noapic

modprobe -r sbp2
modprobe -r ohci1394
modprobe -r ieee1394
modprobe via_rhine

net-setup eth0

Let me know about your results. The output of lsmod could also help.

I had this exact same problem and the solution axelsimon just posted worked flawlessly! What exactly made it work? What was the underlying problem?

the modprobe -r commands are removing the modules, which seem to be related to hotplug and firewire support. The regular modprobe command is inserting the via_rhine module, which is probably support for sometime of via chipset, probably the networking card.

Regarding passing the noapic option to the kernel when booting I found this out with google.

Some old mailing-list for kernel 2.1 wrote:
Namely, when "noapic" option is passed symmetric io mode is not entered and
all IRQs appear as "XT-PIC" in /proc/interrupts. The detection of the
IO-APIC is still there, it just isn't used - all is delivered to CPU0.
I think this level of skipping is sufficient because it is the symmetric
mode and the actual use of io apic (rather than detection) was reported as
problemmatic by some on this list (probably with some broken hardware).
