Hiya,
I've recently set up Gentoo on my laptop and it seems that linux isnt well suited to portable computers when it comes to networking. In windows networking is simple as it automatically connects to a network using whatever network interface is available and all this can be controlled from the desktop. Linux however is more problematic as network services need to be started at boot time and if you are not connected to a network during boot up then none of your network services will start i.e. web servers, sshd, ftpd etc
What I am wondering is if there is any way to set up networking to work in a similar way to windows. i.e. I can choose either ethernet or wireless connections from the desktop and dont HAVE to be connected during boot?
Thanks in advance

You can do this easily, add whatever services that you want to the nonetwork boot group. Like say for example you wanted sshd to start even though you haven't established a network connection at boot up. You'd do the following: Code: | rc-update add sshd nonetwork |
What I don't understand is why you don't want a network connection established for you at boot time. _________________ Nothing can stop me now, cuz I just don't care. |
