|

Hi I know this has been answered before, but I can't quite find what I need, I've seen people dance around the answer in many a posts, but I can't quite find a straight answer. What I want to know is, is optical audio output supported under Linux? If so what cards support it, is it reconigzed out of the box or are there tweaks that need to be applied on the whole? Also I would be very obliged if anyone knew where I can find some good documentation on this.
Thanks in advance,

Since optical out is purely a function of the hardware, it doesn't matter whether Linux supports this or not.
As long as you can address the output, i.e. send data to it, it should work. _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

Ok I get what you're saying, but maybe what I should of asked is does ALSA support optical output? And if that isn't really relavent then how do I address the output? Because from what I've seen browsing the ALSA Card Matrix is none of the drivers seem to have support optical output, but I could be missing it, if it were under another name or I'm just blind.
Thanks for the help,

Depends on your card. When browsing the ALSA soundcard matrix you have to look for "TOSo" in the notes section to see if it's supported. ALSA Soundcard Matrix wrote: | [TOSo] IEC-60958 TOSLINK Output |
I got a Terratec Aureon 5.1Fun. The optical output appears as "IEC958 Output" in my mixer and works perfect. |
