My PC regularly freezes. It normally runs headless, but I've had it connected to a display so I could catch any error messages, and this is what appears on the console (all copied by hand, so there may be errors/typos):
Code:
systemname hda:dma_timer_expiry: dma_status == 0x61
systemname hda:DMA timeout error
systemname hda:dma timeout error: status=0x50 {DriveReady SeekComplete}
systemname hda:read_intr: status=0x51 {DriveReady SeekComplete Error}
systemname hda:read_intr: status=0x04 {DriveStatusError}

The machine has the hard drive light on constantly, but it does not respond to any input from network or keyboard - it's hung.

Here's what dmesg says about my hard drives:
Code:

This system stalling has only started since I replaced the aging hda with a new one, as the old one was very noisy and had been subjected to excessive temperature. I'm using high quality cables, all connections are sound (AFAICT).

Can anyone offer any advice? I'm running a 2.6.6 kernel, by the way.

I think what you need to do is recompile your kernel with use multimode by default support enabled in your kernel configuration. Most ata hard drives will require this option to be enabled.

Code:
<*> ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support
<*>   Enhanced IDE/MFM/RLL disk/cdrom/tape/floppy support
---     Please see Documentation/ide.txt for help/info on IDE drives
[ ]     Support for SATA (deprecated; conflicts with libata SATA driver)
[ ]     Use old disk-only driver on primary interface
<*>     Include IDE/ATA-2 DISK support
[*]       Use multi-mode by default
<*>     Include IDE/ATAPI CDROM support
< >     Include IDE/ATAPI TAPE support (EXPERIMENTAL)
< >     Include IDE/ATAPI FLOPPY support
< >     SCSI emulation support
[ ]     IDE Taskfile Access
[ ]     IDE Taskfile IO (EXPERIMENTAL)
---     IDE chipset support/bugfixes
<*>     generic/default IDE chipset support

also check your kernel config and ensure you have your ide chipset drivers compiled into the kernel image and setup hdparm for the finishing touch. you should see a major improvement in performance and stability. I have a full kernel config available here that your welcome to use. you might also consider updating to ~x86 gentoo-dev-sources as there are allot of stability fixes for 2.6.6

Thanks for all that. However, I already have them in my kernel.

I have built a 2.6.9 kernel and will switch to that when I am in front of the machine (I'm fairly confident that switching kernels will work, but it would be typical if the one time it went wrong is when I try it remotely.

I have also disabled auto-sleep on that drive, in the hope that it will stop the problem from happening.

Cheers!

I missed that, 1st time. Apart from sleep mode (which I've disabled for now) I have no hdparm settings - what should I be doing?

I went back to the 2.4.23 kernel that I had been running for many months without problem, and this morning the machine hung again - twice!

I have noticed the drive doing the "click of death" that my IBM DeskStars used to do, before I ditched them, and am doing a S.M.A.R.T. test on the drive at the moment, but I wonder if anyone can assist just in case it's not the drive.

The cables are good for UDMA-100. The controller for this drive is in the motherboard, and worked for months at a time with an older hard drive (1999/2000 vintage). The drive is a Maxtor 6E040L0, about 3 months old. All connections appear to be fine. I'm using the correct ends for the cables (they're labelled).

So, for anyone reading:

Is there anything I could/should do with this drive and hdparm or any other utility? Please?

Cheers,
bL.
