I'm currently looking into upgrading my workstation, and I'v come up with this setup:

Total price: near $400 (incl. VAT and delivery).
But, as the gentoo-user I am, is this the most bang for the buck and is it even compatible with the 2.6 kernel?

Would I have to get a new PSU (current: 350Watt ATX)?

My desktop is mostly used for: Watching TV (Asus TV+FM card (Phillips SAA7134 chip), writing some PHP-scripts with a bit of SQL and generelly surfing...
The overall most important for me is:
Low compile time! (Very important for a real gentoo'er :) )
High instant performance (quick response in programs etc.)
Low price/performance retio, but with some upgrade in mind...

Please give sugestions (I'm not a hardware freak, and could probadly mix up a 386DX2 CPU and a Opteron in a second!) and/or tell about your setup (sorry, limited to a AMD64 class hardware setup)

PS. Current system: Asus A7A-133 MB, AMD Duron @ 1GHz and 640MB RAM@133 MHz... I can only become better...

I have one question for you:
why the socket 754?
If I may make a suggestion, I'ld highly advice you to go for the socket939. Reason for choosing this socket over the 754, is the upgrade path....

afaik socket 939 is here now, and will stay! the socket 754 is here now, but it will be gone in just a few months...
I'm also looking into getting a some new hardware, but I'm switching to asus A8V and amd64 socket939 3500+

you didn't specify the rest of your hardware (cdrom, dvdr, vid card) so it's really hard to tell what psu to choose, although I can say that you're pretty safe with a 350Watt psu as long as you're not going to get a real high-range card (6800GT, X800)

just my thoughts :)

... wrong link and name, should have been: AMD Athlon64, 3000+, S939, BOX

The rest of my hardware:
3 ATA133 Harddisks (not anything fancy, average powerconsumption I belive), a LiteON 48x CD-writer and a old, ugly and slow GeForce6200 (I think) which is suposed to be replaced within a few weeks... (christmas anyone (giving a hint to my girlfriend :-) )

why cheap out on the psu when it could potentialy take out your entire system if i goes, also a more powerfull one will run cooler and hence the fans slower and quieter.

as to why get a 754 socket now well i got one a week ago partialy cause i was in a hurry but also because the price diference meant i will probably be able to buy an new motherboard for the saving and get all the new cool toys that will be out in a year or so, my only regret is id have prefered a chip with 1meg cache but hey my 3000+ still overclocks to a crazy ammount

Well, now I have added a new PSU (400Watt) low noise (16 - 19 dB (I couldn't find any info about if it would be dBa or dBb or whatever))

My main concern is if the hardware will work with dev-sources or what problem I could incounter
