|
|
Hello, I just finished my gentoo install and got everything working. I was about to emerge mplayer, but I would like to know in what order I need to do them. I know I need quite a few many video codec files, and I recall when I installed mplayer from scratch, that it was silly and tedious.
I just want to make sure I do it correctly, so if you have done this please advise!! Thanks. |

All you need to do is Code: | # USE="<your flags here>" emerge mplayer | Portage will take care of downloading, compiling, and installing anything necessary. _________________ ~~ Peter: Programmer, Mathematician, STEM & Free Software Advocate, Enlightened Agent, Transhumanist, Fedora contributor

Yes, if you set the appropiate USE flags:
Code: |
hannibal root # emerge mplayer -uDvp
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
Calculating dependencies ...done!

Note: you don't need divx4linux to see divx videos, they are handled with another library that decodes all mpeg4 videos (including MS-MPEG, xvid, dix, ect). can't remember it's name right now.
You can take a look too /usr/portage/profiles/use.desc and use.local.desc or use UFED (emerge ufed) for a fairly short and usually not very much informative description of the USE flag in question _________________ Signature wanted... Reward 10.000 € |

Im not sure those are quite all the right use flags...
With -mpeg I dunno what will be missing. With -encode you won't get mencoder, and -divx4linux I'm guessing you can't encode to divx4/5 but dont know about playing.
And be sure to add +network so you can play stuff over the Internet.
If you really wanna be tweaky, add -gif, -png and -jpeg since most people probably don't encode/decode to/from images, and save yourself 30 seconds of compile time or something.
