Hello, I just finished my gentoo install and got everything working. I was about to emerge mplayer, but I would like to know in what order I need to do them. I know I need quite a few many video codec files, and I recall when I installed mplayer from scratch, that it was silly and tedious.

I just want to make sure I do it correctly, so if you have done this please advise!! Thanks.

All you need to do is
Code:
# USE="<your flags here>" emerge mplayer
Portage will take care of downloading, compiling, and installing anything necessary.

It will come with the vast majority of codecs you will need... some very uncommon codecs (.nsv for example) might be missing, but you can get them.

Yes, if you set the appropiate USE flags:

Code:

hannibal root # emerge mplayer -uDvp

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies            ...done!
[ebuild  N    ] media-libs/xvid-1.0.2  -doc 528 kB
[ebuild  N    ] media-video/mplayer-1.0_pre4-r7  -3dfx +3dnow +3dnowex +X -aalib +alsa (-altivec) +arts -bidi +cdparanoia -debug -directfb -divx4linux -dvb +dvd -dvdread -edl -encode -esd -fbcon -ggi +gif -gnome -gtk -ipv6 -joystick +jpeg -libcaca -lirc -live -lzo -mad -matroska -matrox +mmx +mmx2 -mpeg -mythtv -nas -network +nls +oggvorbis +opengl -oss +png +real -rtc -samba -sdl +sse -svga -tga +theora +truetype -v4l -v4l2 -xinerama -xmms -xv +xvid 5,243 kB

Total size of downloads: 5,772 kB

Note: you don't need divx4linux to see divx videos, they are handled with another library that decodes all mpeg4 videos (including MS-MPEG, xvid, dix, ect). can't remember it's name right now.

You can take a look too /usr/portage/profiles/use.desc and use.local.desc or use UFED (emerge ufed) for a fairly short and usually not very much informative description of the USE flag in question :D

Im not sure those are quite all the right use flags...

With -mpeg I dunno what will be missing. With -encode you won't get mencoder, and -divx4linux I'm guessing you can't encode to divx4/5 but dont know about playing.

And be sure to add +network so you can play stuff over the Internet.

If you really wanna be tweaky, add -gif, -png and -jpeg since most people probably don't encode/decode to/from images, and save yourself 30 seconds of compile time or something. :)
