Just curious: what types of benchmarking tools do you use to determine how well you've config'd a particular Gentoo setup? |

Do people routinely benchmark their setups? I thought this was only done if there's a problem with performance... |

Windows users benchmark there systems all the time. If Microsoft releases a new DirectX, lots of websites writes articles about the 0,5% performance difference between the DirectX9.0b and 9.0c. This is funny because the ability to "tweak" more performance out of a windowsbox is almost non. Linux can be tweaked and tuned easily, but still there exist only few benchmarking tools and few websites about the subject, simply because linux users don't care.
Well I care. Where is 3DMark-like-app? Where is the web-pages with tons of benchmarks that shows me what nvidia-driver is the fastest, what kernel is best for performance and witch cflags to use |

I think it's nearly impossible to measure the performance of a specific setup, e.g. for hd performance you can simply use hdparm -t or more realistic bonnie++ (which gives you even several performance results). If you now consider a whole system.... _________________ Claiming that your operating system is the best in the world because more people use it, is like saying McDonalds makes the best food in the world. |
