Under KDE, go to control center, select sound & multimedia, sound system, hardware, and select different device/subsystem. |

you're mixing several problems together. basic layer is provided by linux kernel, and it can be provided in two ways, ALSA and OSS. OSS is older standard, ALSA newer one, better and recommended. applications can use this layer directly and they often do.
KDE, however, provides (as do other desktop systems like gnome) another layer called arts. applications using arts (ie. compiled againgst arts libraries) don't need to know anything about alsa, oss or any other sound systems being used on another systems, from bsd to solaris, only arts, as they're talking directly to it.
to your problem - report like "it doesn't work, but worked on another distribution", without further information, is useless. If you want us to help you, you'll have to provide more informations. |

what is your native language?
what do you mean with "knotify crashed"? what did it say? include exact error messages, if possible... _________________ cd /local/pub && more beer > /dev/mouth

I'm having a very similar problem. Whenever I use the kde control panel to make any changes to the sound section, everything is fine until I hit apply. Then a window pops up saying the program crashed. Here is the backtrace:

Maybe this will help to figure out the problem. The sound section of the control panel is the only place there is a problem. I tried completely wiping out my .kde directories and configurations and starting with a clean setup. The crashes still occur. |

forget kde for a moment and work on your sound.
open a console and run an mp3 using 'mplayer some.mp3' to see if your soundcard is even working. if you get an error message there then check your dmesg and see if there is a problem loading your sound card. it may be the module is not loaded, or an alsa/art/etc issue. if there is no error in mplayer but nothing is heard then run alsamixer at command line and check to see if your audio levels are muted or turned on high enough for audio to be heard. run mplayer mp3 again. if you hear something now work on kde issue.
if you do have dmesg error then try searching the forums for your soundcard and the error message. |

I have a similar problem:
the KDE sounds are still working, since the upgrade from KDE 3.3.0 to 3.3.1 knotify crashes after applying any changes to the sound system in the control center. Deletion of knotfyrc did not fix the problem.
This is no module, kernel or driver problem because with kde 3.3.0 everything works perfectly !
kind regards

Just KDE and X is freezing, change to console or Ctrl+Alt+Backspace X restart is possible. But anyway, I am not used to make this kind of experience with my linux box, therefore it is a disastrous experience for me. Furthermore all data of other X applicatons are lost .. |

I'm having a very similar problem as the others that have posted here, where arts works for maybe the first sound and never again (eg. KDE login sound) and then it seems like arts just won't play anything anymore. I've done all the editing of knotifyrc and killing both artsd and knotify and arts might play the next sound notification and then get stuck doing nothing again. I thought that this might have been caused by the fact that I'm using Gentoo Hardened, but I guess not. |

I was having these problems with arts and knotify too. I found the solution here https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=227727&highlight=kde+artsd
Basically, don't use arts (uncheck Enable Sound System in the KDE Control Center), get your sound working with ALSA, and use that allplayer script provided in the thread linked above. |
