Let me get this straight... You wan't to use a new kernel without restarting your pc? Don't think this is possible...

A lot of people want it to be possible, but it isn't...
Just think about it, some kind of program should replace the running kernel with a new one. The piece of memory where the kernel is in, is protected by the kernel.
If it was possible, I'm sure a lot of people on this forum would know and/or use it.

It sounds a bit experimental to me... but, well, the worst that can happen is that the computer crashes and you have to reboot |

I don't see why you can't reboot...

Yup, kexec is what you are after but I wouldn't rely on it too much (the only reason to use it is to keep your uptime).
It is experimental and I'm not sure even mm-sources still has it in as an option anymore (they did try it for a while). If it isn't back in then you will have to patch the kernel and give it a go.
All I can say if you do use it is.... Good Luck! |

I thought it didn't preserve uptime, because it has to restart the init process, on which uptime is based? Maybe they've changed it since I last read about it though. _________________ My blog
