I use DHCP at school (school project computer to be used eventualy solely at home) and Static IPs at home. I am able to successfully switch the DHCP and Static IP in the appropriate file by '#'ing out the appropriate lines in that file but no matter what I do when I am in my actual system I am not able to get the network or internet up and running. I am able to get it up from my 2004.2 live CD though. I chroot into my system and get emerging done but I would really like to get it up without having to go through the live CD every time.

This sounds like a missing kernel module. Its possible that you dont have the necessary modules compiled or It might be just that they are not loading on boot.
Boot with your livecd and do lsmod, then boot for four hard drive and do it again and post the differences you find. |
