|
|
I have a laptop with an Intel 82855GM graphics controller (Centrino). I cannot get X11 to go higher than 1024x768 as a resolution. I *think* that the limiting factor is not the chip (it has modes higher than this according to both the X.org logfile and the 855resolution utility) but rather the LCD display. I don't know much about LCDs: do they have maximum resolutions? I remember that this machine wouldn't go higher than 1024x768 in Windows, so maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree here.
TIA,

from my experience most LCDs have a lower maximum resolution than CRTs...
i know that my laptop's resolution is limited to 1280x960, so it wouldn't be a huge surprise to learn that some are limited to 1024x768 |

Thanks to 855resolution patch i was able to reach to 1400x1050.But this specific model supports that resolution, though. |

I looked at the 855resolution program--and '855resolution -l' lists lots of resolutions higher than 1024x768. I think I can do those on an external monitor only, though. I tried reprogramming 1024x768 to 1280x1024 and X11 started in 800x600 mode. The LCD appears to be limited to 1024x768.

OK, here you go. The resolution the Laptop able to display is not dictated by the video card that is in it. It is set by the maximun LCD Matrix resolution of the LCD display it self. However if you enable the VGA external port on the notebook and disable the LCD output. You can then surpass the lock resolution of the LCD display Maxtix. In this casue you could get as high as 1280x1024 bepending on the GPU in the laptop. Hope this explains this. That why if you buy some laptop from some retail stores at low cost. Check the spec and you see a nice GPU but the 1024x768 is the lock resolution of the LCD. Which means cheaper display and cheaper cost to sell the unit in the retail market. |

My laptop has a LCD display which works fine in 1680x1050 and 1280x1024, but all other resolutions seems to not work. Only 1680x1050 seems to work in Fluxbox though
In XP I can run 1680x1050, 1280x1024, 1024x768, 800x640 without any problems. So I don't think it's only hardware specific. |
