questions on mail clients...

Hi,
I use pine for email, which moves mail from /var/spool/mail/user to ~/mbox, leaving /var/spool/mail/user empty. When i try to use mozilla mail or kmail to read mail, it doesn't see any of my messages. I copied ~/mbox to /var/spool/mail/user for kicks, and then mozilla mail could see my messages. However, if i ran pine again, it would tack the copy of mbox on to the end of ~/mbox, screwing me all up. So i have two questions:
1) Is it possible to tell pine to leave the mail in /var/spool/mail/user and not copy it to ~/mbox?
2) Is it possible to tell mozilla mail et al to look for ~/mbox?

I have tried a couple things, but haven't had any luck. I'll keep trying, but also would like any helpful input from the Gentoo community.
