I read the scsi emulation guide but still no go. I can execute cdrecord -- scanbus and my burner shows up on scsibus 1. I added hdc = ide-scsi to grub (which is my cd burner, i checked). I also added ide-scsi to /etc/modules.autoload. I creeated this file because I only had /etc/modules.autoload.d and still no go. My kernel options seem to be correct because scanbus works.

But when I load k3b it still prompts me to enable scsi for my burner.

I changed my fstab so that sr0 is used instead of hdc.
Note: I do have a scsi cd-rom which is sr0 so I added sr1 to fstab as well.

What am I missing?

using: 2.4.22 with an IDE plextor dvd writer.

I did have such a problem when i was using 2.4.22. The trick was to append 'hdX=nodma' to the kernel boot options (hdc in my case) and that solved the problem.

Anyhow, i'd recommend you to give a try to the 2.6 kernel, which doesn't need SCSI emulation anymore.

Thanks for the tip. I'll try it when I get home.

I want to go to 2.6 but I'm a linux noob and I still have yet to get my current system completely set up the way I want.

Thanks again KaZeR!

Since I have no idea which 'scsi emulation guide' you followed....

1. Did you configure your kernel with SCSI support as modules or built into the kernel?

2. When configuring SCSI support in your kernel, did you enable scsi cdrom support?

3. I suggest compiling scsi support built in to the kernel (just an option).

Sorry if this to basic but I have no idea what you've done other than add syntax to grub.conf....

-Amoeba-

I followed the guide below.
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=68321

I've compiled the three or four options requied in the kernel, configured grub.conf and tried the troubleshooting tips in this guide without success.

I'm going to try what KaZeR suggested. Do you have any idea what might be causing this problem?

Tnx

No. I can't imagine why your scsi emulation would just crap out as you've described. If you are on a 2.4.x kernel, I suggest 2.6.x only because it's current and stable. As KaZer said, most burning programs no longer require scsi emulation under 2.6. I, personally, prefer scsi emulation because it IS faster (obviously not as fast as true scsi).

Try scsi emulation with a 2.6.x kernel. I bet it works. But I'm not betting money. =)

Also, I stay away from building my kernel with modules. I prefer everything built in, but this is, of course, my choice. And apperantly, my choice works fine. I am able to burn CDs under 2.6.4 with scsi-emulation.

Give it a try, can't hurt.

If you want to stick a bit more with 2.4, have you tried to append hd?=nodma to the kernel's parameters? Some peripherals have difficulties to deal with both dma and scsi emulation. What is you hardware?

Anyhow, 2.6 is faaaaar easier to install than 2.4. Really worth giving it a try :)

Well, I just upgraded to 2.6 and my burner is still slow as Christmas.
I'm using the latest k3b, should I be using the latest set of cdr-tools or dvd+rw-tools?

Will scsi emulation with 2.6 solve my problem?

Thanks again for the help!
