I finally bought an AMD64 2800+ today.
My Gentoo 32 bit desktop system is running fine on it.
I use my system for mail , newsgroups, latex and and (increasingly rarely) functional programming.
I have a few tiny ( less than 5 megs ) that I run on postgresql.
Should I switch to Gentoo 64 bit ?
Cons:
My system is stable and useful now.
Pro:
The temptation to install 64bits to have another bunch of problems to fix is great

Then you should. There's a need for a userbase which can be useful to non-techies.

I also think that you should.
I have 64bit gentoo and don't have 32bit chroot.
Well i have another 32bit cpu  but it's not very usable. |

It all depends on what you need, software wise. So far I have installed just about every program that I need and use and they all work perfect in 64b mode. My big concern is the new system going to be worth the headache of install and purchase price. |

I am intrigued to understand why these 'should I switch' posts are made!
Why buy an amd64 cpu? and are there any real show stopper reasons not to use 64bit gentoo??!

Well this will be the case again using 64bit, depending on the system you have, ati for instance, but not a major issue.

Well the main reason people buy the AMD64 is because for the price it is cheaper than the same rated P4 chip. For instance the AMD64 3200+ chip is $190, but the P4 3.2g Prescott is $270. Also the AMD64 are now cheap enough that it almost makes more sense to buy it over a reqular Althon.
I have haven't found a real show stopper that would make me not want to install Gentoo in 64b mode. Sure there are some minor issues with some software, but that is to be expected. Just look at 64b on the Windows side, it suffers from a worse problem then Gentoo or Linux in general. One thing that would be a show stopper for me, if I played games on my PC is the video card drivers, ATI sucks at supporting 64b. I got 4700fps on the old MB/CPU combo, this new AMD64.MB combo cannot even install the ATI-DRIVERS and get them to work. I still get about 700fps in GLXGEARS, but that is far from the 4700fps I had before. Even with that drop in framerate I haven't noticed using a web browser or even rotating/animation preview in Blender 3d. Also look at the right way, the more people who go to a full 64b OS the more apps will be converted or made for it. |

I understand, but these are very well documented issues (ATI) that are all over these forums.
I've luckily been using 64bit gentoo from the outset and these questions were very valid then, many months ago.
Now 64bit gentoo is as stable as 32bit (if not better).

I have a 64bit too and for the love of me i could not get MPlayer running like it did on 32Bit gentoo... plus a bunch of other things concerning klibido
