I installed Supertux on my system, to stick with the safe computing habbits I tried running the game as a user, but I get the seg fault about SDL parachutes, if I run it as root I don't have this problem. Has anyone else had this problem, if so how did you fix it? I tried running Supertux with the --opengl flag and the --debug-mode flag, both give my the seg fault. Thank you in advance.

Sounds like a permission problem.
Can you run glxinfo and glxgears as a user?
(And please post the output of glxinfo)

That's odd.

Just to make sure, this is the latest stable release of supertux and not the cvs version, right?

You could try running it again after removing your .supertux directory to make sure that no old settings is messing things up but that shouldn't be the case if it's a new install.

If you really want to get dirty you can make an strace of the problem:
Code:
strace -o supertux.log supertux

That will log every systemcall made from supertux into a file called supertux.log.
It would be nice if you could put that log on a separate site and not in a post since it will be huge but I suppose you can post it if you lack hosting.

Yes, this is the latest stable release that I installed from Portage. This is a new install and I've removed ~/.supertux before without getting anywhere. The log file is at http://www.u.arizona.edu/~brims/supertux.log

I started skimming through that log file and I see that a lot of libraries are missing. emerge -s libsdl shows it's installed. I did a "locate libz.so.1" it shows /lib/libz.so.1 but the log file says it is looking in /usr/lib/. /dev/sound/dsp is really in /lib/dev-state/sound/dsp. Along with a lot of other "missing files" that are just in the wrong place.

Is supertux the only game having problems, which root doesn't have :?

I don't see anyone here talking about the "games" group, so perhaps you could try putting yourself in that group and try again :)

This is the only game I have so far tried. I have added my user name to the games group.

Edit: I did that a while ago and it did not help, except allow me to execute the game.

This isn't a group problem, wouldn't be allowed to execute the binary if the user weren't in the games group.

Don't worry about those missing libraries, it will goes through the path variable until it scores a hit so it's only normal.

As far as I can see from that log, it might very well be a sound issue.
Mind doing a "ls -l /dev/snd/*" for us?
Are you using also or oss? Is arts running? (try killing it if it is)

I am using ALSA. I killed /usr/kde/3.2/bin/artsd which was running. Son of a gun, that's all that was needed. Thank you very much for your help.

Arts is very good at a few things, unfortunatly it is also the cause of a lot of trouble. :-(

Anyhow, it is discontinued now so hopefully we will see a new solution in the next release of kde.
