I'm trying to install gentoo the second time, but on my new computer I've got a provider with xdsl instead of cable. Now things are pretty complicated for me. When setting up dhcp everything seems to work fine but when I try to ping some ip I don't get any packages back. I managed to set the connection up under windows.

My provider is Inode and I have got a server IP: 10.0.0.138 a username with password and two nameservers.

Please tell me what to do or ask for further information.

I don't think this is likely to be a gentoo specific question.

In any case, information needed would include:

Are you running a firewall? Are you sure you are not just blocking the packets as they come back from your isp?

What does your routing table look like?

What about your resolv.conf?

Are you getting a 10.0.0.x ip address? If so, you're in trouble.
10.x.x.x is a non-routable ip on the internet, reserved for intranet
allocations.

The xDSL provider I use gives out a non routable address the first time you connect with a new device. You are force directed to a 'Sign Up' web page where the new devices MAC address is entered into the DHCP server table.

You might be having a similar situation.

In the manual for Installation of Ethernet-Access from my provider it is said that I bring up my connection using the pptp command, but I can't find it on the gentoo installation-CD. Is there any other possibility to make a connection with username and password?

and for kipz:
I'm not behind any firewall and at the beginning of the installatioin I don't have any line in rc.config!
