Hello All,
I currently use Debian Linux on Vmware. I wanted to make a switch to Gentoo. I was wondering if there will be performance enhancement if I install gentoo all the way from source. Also what should I compile it against ? i686 , Pentium 2 or Pentium 4? |

Compared to Debian, it is likely that there will be a little performance enhancement. Don't expect real wonders since we are talking about VM's. I think VMWare actually runs stuff on your own CPU, so in effect it is emulation whatever instruction set your CPU uses (can do p4, I think). |

The videocard and network are always virtual hardware in VMWare (2D only 16MB, and AMD PCNet32 respectively).
Sound can be chosen to be the default virtual soundcard, or (one of) your host's soundcard(s).
CPU is transparrent, so optimize to your actual hardware here without fear . |

Negligible, if any. _________________ The Debian User Forums - help them grow! |

You should compile it to the CPU that is in your Machine running VMware.
The Virtual Machine sees the CPU, and has direct access to it. |
