Hey, I'm a newbie to gentoo, but I made the switch because I heard almost nothing but good things (the only bad being the compile time of the different merges)

I recently did my first install, and when I try to run my system on its own, without the livecd, I seem to be unable to edit certain files, or do any emerging.

Here is an example
--------------------------------------
vincent root # emerge emacs
Calculating dependencies ...done!
>>> emerge (1 of 1) app-editors/emacs-21.3-r3 to /
>>> md5 src_uri ;-) emacs-21.3.tar.gz
>>> Unpacking source...
>>> Unpacking emacs-21.3.tar.gz to /var/tmp/portage/emacs-21.3-r3/work
gzip: error while loading shared libraries: cannot make segment writable for relocation: Permission denied
tar: Child returned status 127
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

!!! ERROR: app-editors/emacs-21.3-r3 failed.
!!! Function unpack, Line 373, Exitcode 2
!!! failure unpacking emacs-21.3.tar.gz
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, NOT this status message.
-------------------------------

Also, if I leave the computer alone for an extended period of time, I think it goes into a sleep mode, that I seem unable to pull it out off. Basically, if this happens, I have to cold boot the system, and restart.

If anyone has some suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.

First problem: gzip (or one of it's libraries (does it use zlib?), or some library tool) is broken... dunno what to do about it, most likely more packages will be broken. Recompiling lots of things, or just reinstalling, would probably solve it, unless the same thing happens again, in that case either you are doing something wrong or there's a bug somewhere :)

Second problem: Disable all power management options in the kernel and BIOS, reboot and see if it still happens, if not, try enabling one at a time and work out a stable combination. I can't let my HD enter sleep mode or Gentoo will die, so I disabled it in the kernel.

Did you verify the stage tarballs md5? Your downloaded stage file could have been corrupt, which would cause many random errors. If you havn't deleted it, you could still check it.

It is also possible you have a hardware failure. The livecd has a memory tested built in. When you boot off the livecd type
Code:
memtest86
