Just wondering if anyone has considered this idea. Currently, both firefox and thunderbird come equipped with a password _vault_ component which allows users to store all of their web/email passwords, fully encrypted, using a single master password.
It seems to me like it would be very easy to create a stand alone application based on the Mozilla software toolkit to create a generic vault application. Ideally, this application could store bank PINs, Swiss bank account numbers, computer account logins, etc. It should also be able to export the entire vault contents into an encrypted file and import the same information from a similarly encrypted one.
I had used a similar application under Windows (made by Counterpain) and while it was great, it suffered from a few issues. First, it only ran on Windows. Second, it didn't integrate with existing other password managers in order to share information. And third, it had no way to export information so that once I typed everything in, it was completely static to that installation. Not very useful when I was storing hundreds of passwords that might need to be transfered as a group.
I envision the app working with vault files, where each vault has its own master password. This would allow people in a SysAdmin workgroup to share tech logins, will still being able to access their own personal email passwords or website logins seperately.
Comments? Thoughts? Am I rambling? |
