Hi.
I downloaded thunderbird 1.0 here this other day, but I couldn't get it to start.
I extracted the "thunderbird-1.0.tar.gz" archive, with "tar -xvzf thunderbird-1.0.tar.gz".
Then I go into the directory where the files were extracted (which is /home/ziggwarth/thunderbird), and simply tried typing "thunderbird".
Then I got this message:
# thunderbird
/home/ziggwarth/thunderbird/thunderbird-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object files: No such file or directory
I have GTK installed, and there IS a file named libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0 in /usr/lib. So I really don't understand what the problem could be.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in advance. |

It sounds like you downloaded a binary release of thunderbird - but you don't need to do that if you are using gentoo. The approach that it sounds like you took will not work because just untarring the release does not tell the binaries where to find the dependencies that they need.
Just use
Code: |
emerge mozilla-thunderbird
|
or
Code: |
emerge mozilla-thunderbird-bin
|
The later is if you want the binary release to be installed rather than waiting for it to compile. |

Ah. Thanks.
I got it to work now.
I still think this was... strange, so if anyone has any suggestions on what went wrong when I used the downloaded binaries, I'm very grateful.
Of course, it works now (which is the most important), but I really hate when things just don't work, and I have to go another way to get to my goal :p
This is because when it happend once, it can happen again, and maybe I'm not so fortunate that I can use Portage that time (another distro maybe, or the package isn't available in Portage?)
Besides, I'm kind of curious about this, as it SHOULD work with the binaries I downloaded.
Is there anywhere I should define the path to the /usr/lib-directory or something? A config file that comes with thundebird maybe? Or some other config file?
Again, thanks for the help. I'm just looking for answers for what went wrong |
