I am building a Linux/BSD box for my class for a grade. I want to have a reasonable good computer for use for my own after wards. I am thinking about using an Athlon XP CPU. Any recommendations for motherboards and processors. I'm looking at the Barton 2500+ I want to keep it pretty cheap. _________________ AMD Athlon 64 1.8

I think there's many possible combinations here. I've not put together anything necessarily amazing, but I have put quite a few boxes together. if you're just thinking 32 bit, then grab any of the ASUS or ABIT nforce2 mobo's to go along with the 2500 barton. That proc is easily overclockable with a good heatsink and fan. Also, the nforce2 chipsets seem to bench a little higher than the VIA chipset. Make sure you get something with dual channel memory support. (pretty standard now). And get some matching pairs of good 333Mhz memory. I seem to have read somewhere that the system performs better with the memory clock and CPU fsb match. Barton is 333Mhz as well.
Nvidia doesn't always beat out an ATI card for performance, but I've had many headaches with ATI cards under linux. If you're not planning on using GLX, then the default nv xorg driver is flawless. |

what are some good cases? I just want a plain basic case. Antec seems to be the best in my mind. _________________ AMD Athlon 64 1.8

the nforce2 ultra is a good pick.
As for cases. Antec makes a good cheap case. I've also used codegen without too many problems. They make a $35.00 codegen case with a handle on the top of it. For a cheap case, that ones pretty nice. I'm a big fan of the handle. Both newegg and mwave had those cases. |

the total: 340 bucks!
This rocks...i can see why people are still using windows..its not the OS its the freaking hardware! I just got a nicely powerful System for 300 bucks! the equi8vilent costs my 700 from apple. I have a G5 i wont lie, nothing will compare to that performance but this is a nice and cheap BSD box where many more OSes are support and run well. Thanks for the help guys and i will be expecting this guy pretty darn soon...Newegg is in NY im in NY have a great day! _________________ AMD Athlon 64 1.8
