When I installed gentoo and booted it! It booted fine, I botted as root. It is working fine, netword is well. But There is a problem: how to come into a graphical environment. I emerged kde, it was doing it quite a long time. Now when it is emerged, how do I start it. Do I must to emerge some other packages in order to desktop to work?

First I would recommend editing your /etc/rc.conf file to let it know which GUI you want as your default. Mine is the following, but be sure to put your KDE version in there.

Code:
XSESSION="kde-3.3.1"

After that all you need to run should be startx

If your question is in regards to which one you emerged please run the command.
Code:
emerge -p kde

If you are running your gui and want to find out which version you are in go into konqueror and choose Help -> About.

Dear Eleanor, seems like you'll have to do this too:

In your /etc/rc.conf, do not forget to precise your display manager::
Code:
DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm"

then :
Code:
# echo "exec startkde" > ~/.xinitrc

When you've edited your ~/.xinitrc properly you can run startx and to make KDE start every time you boot:

Code:
# rc-update add xdm default

Is that clear enough ??? Maybe a bit messy
Anyway you'll find everything you need in the docs

Good luck!!! :D

[EDIT] There it is  http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/kde-config.xml [/EDIT]

What is xorg.conf?

Yes I did and it seemed to be working only as root. If I want to startx as regular user that can't be done. But as root it is working properly!

First of all have you emerged xorg or xfree????

/etc/X11/xorg.conf is the configuration file of the server xorg

To make your user able to use startx you have to allow him to use the video peripherals. Have you done it?

But why must I emerge xorg. I already emerged kde, it is most popular than xorg I thing, but it is almost the same.

Why must I do video peripherals. No I think I haven't done it yes, how can I do it. Do I must to use only the video peripherals to make user able to use startx, or I must make something else?

xorg is the X server and kde runs on top of xorg, so you need xorg and it has already been merged when you merged kde as a dependency. You now simply need to set up the X server, so that it and on top of it kde can run.

These should get you started:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml (in case you have a nvidia graphic card)
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/ati-faq.xml (in case you have an ati graphic card)

Good luck!
:D

In order for people on the forums to help you, you need to be clear about exactly what error your computer is giving you. I have no idea what you mean by "it don't wanna boot desktop!" It might not want to start for one of a gajillion reasons.

Anyway, lemme fill you in:

1. Xorg + KDE = Desktop. You need both. If you emerge'd KDE, then it should've emerge'd Xorg automatically too, so you shouldn't have to worry about that.

2. There is a file, /etc/X11/xorg.conf -- this file contains the settings for your monitor and video card. If you type the command:

Code:

X -configure

It should try to make this file for you automatically.

3. Xorg is very minimalistic -- it just gets a black and white screen with a mouse cursor up and running. To get a desktop, once Xorg starts running, kde needs to start. To get that to happen, you should edit the file /etc/rc.conf at the bottom line, the XSESSION line, and edit like other poster said above.

4. Once you have done all that, type startx to start Xorg and kde. If for some reason this doesn't work, come back here and post again with the error message you received.

Also, when you type startx, make sure you are logged in as a normal user not as root. Also, when you want to do something as root, type:

Code:

su -

NOT su root. Typing su root will cause pathing problems. Do su - instead. When you're done as root, type:

Code:

exit

NOT su user. su'ing again will cause pathing problems so that xorg may not start. Use exit to go back to a normal user.

I think that's all the gotchas ;)

As normal user:
eleanor@localhost eleanor $ startx
xauth: timeout in locking authority file /home/eleanor/.Xauthority

As root it gives me an error:
VGA(0): given depth(16) is not supported by this driver
Screens found, but none have a usable configuration

Ok :

1- what type of graphic card do you have? Nvidia or Ati ?
2-did you emerge the appropriate drivers for it?
