Since installing Gentoo, I have been struggling to get gensplash, bootsplash or any kind of splash working on my Thinkpad R31 for a nice, clean looking Splash screen during boot. I have read every forum and wiki I have found, all with no luck. I have followed all of the instructions very carefully with the exception of installing Spock's patch because I get this error message
Code:

patching file drivers/char/keyboard.c
patch: **** malformed patch at line 11:                                                        +               extern int splash_verbose(void);

But I'm not sure I need it anyway because I am using the i810fb driver!

My grub.conf file looks like this:
Code:

default 0
timeout 2
splashimage=(hd0,0)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz

title=Gentoo 2.6.8.1
root(hd0,0)
kernel (hd0,0)/boot/kernel-2.6.8.1 root=/dev/hda3 video=i810fb:ywrap,pmipal,1024x768-32@60 splash=silent,theme:emergence
initrd /boot/fbsplash-emergence-1024x768

...and as far as I can tell..this is right.
dmesg returns:
Code:

Kernel command line: root=/dev/hda3 video=i810fb:ywrap,pmipal,1024x768-32@60 splash=silent,theme:emergence
fbsplash: silent
fbsplash: theme emergence
Local APIC disabled by BIOS -- reenabling.
Found and enabled l

...but I get no splash screen at all...is there something else that I am missing. Any help would be awesome....thanks.

I never got fbsplash to work with any card-specific fb driver (I tried rivafb). Try disabling that in your kernel and do vesafb-tng.

Oh yeah...and that didn't work either. dmesg says it is calling the correct parameters, but no splash! Again...is it because I can't get Spock's patch installed?

YOU ROCK! I plugged in the 2.6.9-r9 kernel from gentoo-dev-sources and it worked perfectly the first time. Thanks for the help...
