Last time I looked I had a working audacity , now I get a warning and find I have no record or play capacity . The device list is empty!
Looking further I find :

I have alsa and oss in USES , (alsa does oss emulation)

Have you emerged alsa-oss and are all modules loaded for alsa-oss?

Yes , thanks, snd_pcm_oss was not getting loaded .
I thought it should get loaded automatically if audacity needed it but obviously its not directly dependant.
Me being too minimalist , I guess.
