I'm looking for the best drop-in replacements for some programs in Windows. I'm using KDE and I'm looking for your opinions on what would be most effective for these instances:

1) Adobe Photoshop replacement
2) Windows Media Player replacement (I need something to play movies, music, and DVDs here)
3) Is Firefox the best, or should I just stick with konqueror?
4) Is there a good gui-based (KDE) wireless network connection manager?
5) What's a good irc program?

Also, is there a way to shutdown from KDE as a normal user instead of dropping to a console, logging in as root, and then shutting down?

Some of these questions are pretty basic, but I'm relatively new to Linux and would appreciate any help you can provide.

Thanks!!

1) Gimp
2) Mplayer (this is my favourite, but there are others)
3) I'd stick with Firefox
4) Don't know
5) xchat might be a good one to start with.

I'm pretty sure you can set that up, but I don't use KDE so I couldn't tell you how. I'm sure someone else will :)

Gimp
Mplayer
Firefox
Quickswitch (not graphical, just works well)
GAIM

Remember that part of the fun is trying stuff to see what you like. Its not like Windows where you are stuck with a $70 program that you don't like. In addition you can try a new instant messenger and know that the rest of your system will still function in the morning.

LOL, agreed. I guess installing something and then uninstalling it doesn't junk your system up too much b/c you don't have a registry  Anyway, it's helpful to have something to go on. I could plug around in the forums for a while, but stuff gets out-dated so quickly that I don't know if I'm looking at an old solution, a new one, or a brand-spankin-experimental new solution. I forgot to ask...Is there a good defrag utility, or does Linux manage that on its own?

there's a fundamental difference in the way that *nix file systems and Win file systems approach the issue of fragmentation on the hard disk.

windows file systems tend to put your data wherever there is open space on the disk. if your file is going to span multiple sectors, windows file systems will not hesitate to fragment your file, filling individual sectors as it moves across your disk.

*nix file systems are a bit more intelligent. in a nutshell, if your file is big, instead of fragmenting it, an intelligent file system will determine where the file will fit best on the disk, minimizing the fragmentation problem.

there;s plenty of good information available, if you want to dig into the subject. the good news is that a defragger isn't as important in linux as it is in windows.

if you run kdm, not kde directly, when you logout there is an option to shutdown the computer as a regular user. i recommend that. to do it, set in /etc/rc.conf, or start it with "kdm"
Code:

DISPLAYMANAGER=kdm

i have to agree with everyone else
gimp
mplayer (with gui is nice)
firefox
no idea on wireless connections
gaim or kopete, especially if you are using kde

Doesn't the Mozilla Foundation offer an IRC client that is included with Mozilla, maybe it can't be downloaded separately and/or it is no good. I don't go on IRC channels often, but I used that one a couple of times and it seemed decent.

For IRC, you can try Konversation. I really like it.

My video player of choice is xine, I use xmms for music and mplayer to fill the gaps between the two. I don't know of a wireless connection manager, but for browsing networks graphically I use LinNeighborhood.
