X and nvidia

lately got some problems with the nvidia drivers for X
when i first installed gentoo, all worked fine for me
since 3 releases ago they stopped working for me (refused to load due to non standard kernel)
now at the latest releases (hoped to work again) i tried them again.
when i now tried to fire X up eveything goes normal (nvidia module even gets loaded!) but when the window-manager appears the whole system freezes (even the magic sys-req won't work :evil:

)

anyone has got the same problems and got the solution, or if anyone think to know a solution... please help me cause i'm so desperate that i would even try dancing around a pentagram killing a chicken and having a bra on my head :twisted:

Have a look in /var/log/XFree86.0.log and see were it's stopping.
