i've finally gotten gnome to launch, but now the problem is that i can only log onto gdm as root. other users don't work because it can't create the necessary files... do i need to mod my user? if so how do i do that?

This is probably not the case, but did you create your users with "useradd -m"? In other words, is the users home dirs in /home/user? If not, gnome might be trying to create the necessary files in /.

Cheers!
